VeeLang Line Deep Dive! 📏¶
Connect the dots and create amazing patterns with VeeLang lines
Welcome Line Artists! ✏️¶
Lines might seem simple, but they're incredibly powerful! Lines connect things, create borders, make patterns, and bring your artwork to life. In VeeLang, lines have some very special abilities!
Your First Line 📝¶
The simplest way to draw a line:
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line from 100,100 to 200,200
This draws a line starting at position 100,100 and ending at position 200,200. It's like drawing a straight line between two dots!
Line Properties - Make It Stand Out! 🎨¶
Lines have fewer properties than shapes, but they're super important:
Color Properties 🌈¶
stroke— The color of your linethickness— How thick or thin your line is
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line from 50,50 to 250,150 having stroke "red", thickness 5
Fun Fact: Lines don't have fill because... well, how do you fill the inside of a line? 😄
Named Lines - The Real Magic! 🪄¶
Here's where lines become incredibly powerful. When you name a line, VeeLang remembers important points along that line:
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line a from 100,100 to 200,200
Now you can use line a to help draw other lines!
Line Properties You Can Access! 📍¶
When you name a line, VeeLang remembers these special points:
| Property | What it gives you | Where it is |
|---|---|---|
start |
Where the line begins | The first coordinate |
end |
Where the line ends | The second coordinate |
midpoint |
The exact middle of the line | Halfway between start and end |
center |
Same as midpoint |
Another name for the middle |
Amazing Line Examples! ✨¶
Let's see all these properties in action:
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line a from 100,100 to 200,200
draw line b from a.start to 100,300
draw line c from a.end to 100,300
draw line d from a.midpoint to 100,200
line e from b.center to 150,200 having stroke "red", thickness 5
draw e
What's happening here? 🤔¶
- Line a: A basic line from corner to corner
- Line b: Starts where line a starts, goes somewhere new
- Line c: Starts where line a ends, goes somewhere else
- Line d: Starts at the middle of line a
- Line e: Created first with properties, then drawn later (notice the two-step method!)
Understanding Line Points 🎯¶
Start vs End¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line road from 50,200 to 350,200 having stroke "gray", thickness 8
draw circle at road.start having radius 10, color "green" // Start marker
draw circle at road.end having radius 10, color "red" // End marker
Midpoint Magic¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line bridge from 100,300 to 300,300 having stroke "brown", thickness 6
draw circle support at bridge.midpoint having radius 15, color "saddlebrown"
Perfect for adding something exactly in the middle!
Building with Lines! 🏗️¶
Example 1: Simple House Outline¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line roof from 200,100 to 300,200 having stroke "darkred", thickness 3
draw line wall1 from roof.end to 300,300 having stroke "brown", thickness 3
draw line wall2 from wall1.end to 200,300 having stroke "brown", thickness 3
draw line wall3 from wall2.end to roof.start having stroke "brown", thickness 3
Example 2: Star Pattern¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line line1 from 250,150 to 250,250 having stroke "gold", thickness 2
draw line line2 from line1.midpoint to 200,200 having stroke "gold", thickness 2
draw line line3 from line1.midpoint to 300,200 having stroke "gold", thickness 2
Example 3: Connect the Shapes¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw circle sun at 100,100 having radius 30, color "yellow"
draw rectangle house at 300,200 having width 80, length 60, color "blue"
draw line sunbeam from sun.center to house.topLeft having stroke "gold", thickness 2
Line Naming - All Your Options! 🏷️¶
Just like other shapes, you have flexible naming options:
Option 1: Create First, Draw Later¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
line myLine from 100,100 to 200,200 having stroke "purple", thickness 4
draw myLine
Option 2: Create and Draw Together¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line myLine from 100,100 to 200,200 having stroke "purple", thickness 4
Option 3: Draw Without Naming¶
// Default canvas: 800 wide, 600 tall, white
draw line from 100,100 to 200,200 having stroke "purple", thickness 4
When to use each? - Use Option 1 when you want to reference the line later - Use Option 2 when you want to see it immediately AND reference it later - Use Option 3 for simple lines you won't need again
Challenge Time! 🏆¶
- 🌟 Challenge 1: Triangle Frame — Use three lines to create a triangle, with each line starting where the previous one ended
- 🌟 Challenge 2: Tic-Tac-Toe Grid — Create the classic game grid using lines that reference each other's positions
- 🌟 Challenge 3: Flower Stem — Draw a flower (circle) and connect it to the ground with a line
- 🌟 Challenge 4: Railway Track — Create two parallel lines using the start and end points of a reference line
- 🌟 Challenge 5: Spider Web — Use line midpoints to create intersecting lines that form a web pattern
Lines in the Real World! 🌍¶
Lines are everywhere around us: - 🏠 Buildings: Every edge and corner - 📝 Writing: Letters are made of line strokes - 🛣️ Roads: Connect places together - ⚡ Electricity: Wires connect devices - 🌐 Internet: Data travels along connection lines
When you master lines in VeeLang, you're learning to connect and structure your digital world!
Pro Tips for Line Masters! 💡¶
✅ Planning Your Lines¶
- Sketch on paper first to plan your
fromandtopoints - Use named shapes' corners and centers as reference points
✅ Thickness Guidelines¶
thickness 1-2: Fine details and delicate workthickness 3-5: Normal drawing and outlinesthickness 6+: Bold statements and heavy borders
✅ Color Strategy¶
- Use the same
strokecolor to group related lines - Use different colors to show different types of connections
✅ Reference Power¶
- Always name lines you'll reference later
- Use
midpointto create perfectly centered connections
