Welcome to VeeLang! 🎨

VeeLang is a little programming language for drawing pictures. You write instructions that read almost like English, and the computer turns them into a drawing:

draw circle at 200, 150 having radius 80, fill "gold"
draw circle at 170, 130 having radius 10, fill "black"
draw circle at 230, 130 having radius 10, fill "black"
draw arc from 240, 180 to 160, 180 having radius 60, thickness 4

Every example in these docs draws its picture right next to the code. Press Run in Playground to open it in the playground, where you can change it and see what happens.

The tutorials build on each other, so start with the first one and go in order:

  1. What is a programming language?: giving the computer instructions
  2. Circles: your first shape, and how to color it
  3. Naming shapes: give shapes names so you can use them again
  4. Rectangles, lines and arcs
  5. Squares and ovals, triangles and polygons and words
  6. Numbers and math: let the computer do the counting
  7. Changing, copying and moving shapes
  8. Shapes inside shapes: build bigger things from smaller ones
  9. Canvas and layers: choose the paper and what goes on top
  10. Repeating things: loops, so the computer does the boring part
  11. Your own shapes: recipes for shapes you invent, with settings

If you forget how a shape works, look it up in the shapes reference or the color list.

For parents and teachers 👪

  • Who it's for: children who can read simple sentences, roughly ages 7 to 12, on their own or with a grown-up. No typing speed or math beyond adding and halving is needed to start.
  • What they learn: the core ideas of programming (instructions, names, properties, variables, loops, reuse and nesting) with instant visual feedback. Mistakes get friendly messages that point at the line and suggest a fix.
  • Free, with no sign-up. There are no accounts, ads or purchases.
  • Private. Drawings are saved in the browser on your device, not on our servers. See Privacy.
  • Open source. The language, the playground and these docs are on GitHub.
